At the 2019 Blues Music Awards (BMAs), Thursday night in Memphis, Tennessee, Third Street Cigar Records congratulated their artist Johnny Rawls. His first release for the label, 2018’s I’m Still Around, was honored as Soul Blues Album Of The Year.

Third Street president John Henry said, “We’re thrilled for Johnny and everyone involved with this album, which has been our best-selling release to date.”

I’m Still Around was self-produced by Rawls. Long one of the blues scene’s most prolific tunesmiths, Rawls wrote all of the disc’s ten songs. Henry points out that the disc is a great example of how Ohio is a great place for blues musicians to record. I’m Still Around was cut at Stone Soup Recording, near Third Street’s headquarters in Waterville, Ohio, with engineer Travis Geiman behind the board. Rawls relied on veteran players from the long-thriving Toledo music scene to back him up on the sessions for the award-winning record.

I’m Still Around found its way onto the Living Blues chart soon after it was released,” says Henry, “as well as into steady rotation on blues radio shows and stations around the world. We have Johnny’s fans and his reputation as a top-notch songwriter and performer to thank for that.”

The win in Memphis is Rawls’ second BMA statue in the Soul Blues Album category, and his tenth such nomination. He won the award once before, for Ace Of Spades, in 2010.

A Mississippi native, Johnny Rawls has been playing the blues as a professional since his high school days. Stars like Little Johnny Taylor, The Sweet Inspirations, and Joe Tex benefited from choosing Rawls for their bands.  Johnny was also bandleader for O.V. Wright until Wright passed away in 1980.

Rawls is currently completing his second album for Third Street Cigar Records, is due for release later this year. He also wrote the bulk of the songs recorded on Still Standing, the debut album by Third Street labelmate Bobby G., and for Bobby’s sophomore effort, Ph.D In The Blues.
